‘Unbridled nonsense’

(The adulation of “diversity” and multiculturalism is a given in high-end Western society. Schools, corporations, clubs, you name it, all bow daily to the Goddess of Diversity. This Goddess also goes by the name of Multiculturalism.

(For years I have pointed out that multiculturalism is a problem to be confronted in the kindest way possible. It is not something to be pushed and promoted. A multicultural society is a troubled, often violent, society. This is patently obvious today in the United States and Western Europe.

(In spite of my frequent mentions of this, I don’t recall even one person passing by here who touched on the subject negatively or positively. It is a no-go zone enforced by fear. To question the glories of multiculturalism is to risk banishment from polite society and your gainful employment too.

(A recent example was Diversity’s Paradox. There were 27 comments and not one soul touched on the topic at hand in spite of my mentioning that no one was addressing the topic.

(The mailed fist of the Left enforces this stance with the same ferocity that Adolf Hitler compelled hatred of Jews.

(No matter. It is nonsense. Here is a guest post by Walter E. Williams, who is black so he gets a small, temporary, pass from Polite Society for his horrendous opinions.)

German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that multiculturalism has “utterly failed,” adding that it was an illusion to think Germans and foreign workers could “live happily side by side.”

The failure of multiculturalism is also seen in Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and other European countries. Immigrants coming from Africa and the Middle East refuse to assimilate and instead seek to import the failed cultures they fled.

Leftist diversity advocates and multiculturalists are right to argue that people of all races, religions and cultures should be equal in the eyes of the law. But their argument borders on idiocy when they argue that one culture cannot be judged superior to another and that to do so is Eurocentrism.

That’s unbridled nonsense. Ask a diversity/multiculturalism advocate: Is forcible female genital mutilation, as practiced in nearly 30 sub-Saharan African and Middle Eastern countries, a morally equivalent cultural value?

Slavery is practiced in northern Sudan.

In most of the Middle East, there are numerous limits placed on women, such as prohibitions on driving, employment and education. Under Islamic law, in some countries, female adulterers face death by stoning, and thieves are punished by having their hand severed.

In some African and Middle Eastern countries, homosexuality is a crime, in some cases punishable by death. Are all these cultural values morally equivalent to those of the West?

The vital achievement of the West was the concept of individual rights, which saw its birth with the Magna Carta in 1215. The idea emerged that individuals have certain inalienable rights. Individuals do not exist to serve government; governments exist to protect their rights.

But it was not until the 19th century that ideas of liberty received broad recognition. In the West, it was mostly through the works of British philosophers, such as John Locke, David Hume, Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill.

Personal liberty implies toleration of differences among people, whether those differences are racial, sexual, ideological or political. Liberty also implies a willingness to permit others who disagree with you to go their separate ways.

This is not the vision of the new immigrants.

In some parts of Britain, Christians are threatened with violence for merely handing out Bibles. Trying to convert Muslims to Christianity is seen as a hate crime. Women are accosted by Muslim men for “improper” dress.

Many women are sexually assaulted. In many European countries, no-go zones where civil authorities will not enter, in which Sharia is practiced, have been established.

According to the Express, “London, Paris, Stockholm and Berlin are among the major European cities that feature on a bombshell list of 900 lawless zones with large immigrant populations.”

Both in Europe and in the U.S., multiculturalism is a leftist elitist vision with its roots in academia. The intellectual elite, courts and government agencies push an agenda that is anything but a defense of individual rights, freedom from conformity and a live-and-let-live philosophy.

Instead, multiculturalism/diversity is an agenda for all kinds of conformity — conformity in ideas, actions and speech. It calls for re-education programs where diversity managers indoctrinate students, faculty members, employees, managers and executives on what’s politically correct thinking.

Part of that lesson is non-judgmentalism, where one is taught that one lifestyle is just as worthy as another and all cultures and their values are morally equivalent.

Western values are superior to all others. But one need not be a Westerner to hold Western values. A person can be Chinese, Japanese, Jewish, African or Arab and hold Western values.

By the way, it is no accident that Western values of reason and individual rights have produced unprecedented health, life expectancy, wealth and comfort for the ordinary person.

There’s an indisputable positive relationship between liberty and standards of living.

There is also indisputable evidence that we in the West are unwilling to defend ourselves from barbarians. Just look at our response to the recent Orlando massacre, in which we’ve focused our energies on guns rather than on terrorists.

    1. Señor Marsh: I encourage you to move as rapidly as possible from “more difficult” to “totally out of the question.” You are on the proper path. Direct friends and relatives down the same path, please.

  1. Oh, please! This argument has existed for over 200 years when transportation first allowed large amounts of people the ability to migrate. Every group of nonwhite, non-Protestant immigrants who have come to the U.S. have been made the targets of bigotry and prejudice. Ignorance is fueled by fear. You folks need to grow a pair.

    1. Come here to MN. You will have many opportunities to practice your open-arms philosophy with Somali Muslims, most of whom smell so bad you literally cannot stand next to them. Who raise dozens of kids (no crime in that) except many of those kids are from the extra multiple wives who are single moms as far as welfare is concerned (therefore the state is paying for raising many of those kids, along with the housing costs for the unwed, single — in the eyes of our law — mother). Most have been here for a generation or more, and still stay in their small cliques. At the YMCA where I see the young men, they are the most rowdy, loud, obnoxious, undisciplined group of kids I have ever seen, and from what I hear from hospital staff, and public employees, the kids model the adult behavior of being loud and demanding.

Because of this behavior of Somalis, many whites decide to pull their kids from the public schools and send them to private or charter schools. The YMCA recently took to having “only-female evenings and nights.” No males allowed. Why? Muslim females cannot swim with male onlookers.

The high school cannot place a Christmas tree in the school building at Christmas. Offensive to Muslims. Very rare to see Somalis in a group speaking English. Even the high school kids among themselves on the street speak Somali. So whose society is being acclimated? One small example of their ability to extract money from the government. Multitudes of “care cabs” abound in this city with a removable magnetic sign on the vehicle … 90% are owned by Somalis They carry passengers to and from medical appointments. Why? Because Medicaid and other insurance pays for indigent folks who have no car. So granny or the second and third wife needs to go to the Doc? Does someone in the family assume their responsibility and take her? No. As long as the government will pay, let’s call cousin Abed. That way he can make his car payments from the government social service organizations.

The Somalis may be good at and for something else, but I know they are good at one thing. Extracting money from federal, state, and local governments. Also a big difference between immigrants from south of the border and Somali refugees. Also, many Somali refugees have been in camps for many years and have come to expect someone to take care of them. When they arrive here, they still expect handouts, and the government accommodates them.

      1. Eric: Jeez, every day I appreciate more and more the fact that I live in Mexico where we do not do this sort of thing. Thanks for the feedback from the trenches.

  2. Multiculturalism is all cultures living alongside each other in peaceful harmony. What you usually talk about is one culture which has a faction which doesn’t tolerate the culture of others. That isn’t multiculturalism or the lack of it. It’s one small group wanting to dominate others for their own reasons, which is not something that should be tolerated by anyone.

Thinking back to the ’70s and ’80s, there were some groups like that called cults. There are many other cultures and races living among us, such as blacks, South and Central Americans, Chinese, Japanese, etc. Some of them ‘Westernize,’ and some don’t. The same holds true in the opposite direction. How many NOBs assimilate when they go to the Middle East, or any other culture?

I don’t see it as “live the way I live” because many of the people around me have different values, and I don’t want their lives. What it comes down to is accepting that we are all different, accepting other cultures, and not trying to force others into our lifestyles.

“The law of the land is the law of God” paraphrases a verse from the Bible, in Romans I think, and if you go to many Muslim countries, they have laws allowing stoning, amputation, etc., which is abhorrent to us. If you choose to live in one of those places, you should conform to their laws. We expect the same from people who come here.

Just as an executive summary, it’s not multiculturalism that you and your guest columnist are talking about. It’s radical Muslim terrorism, and Muslims wanting to move to Western countries, live on social assistance, and bitching that we don’t live within their religious requirements. I agree with you on that, just not what you call it.

    1. Kris: Multiculturalism/diversity these days refers to the advocacy/promotion of increasing cultural differences within a society. This is seen as a positive thing by the political left in spite of massive historical proof that multiple cultures living in the same space leads far more often to strife and violence than it does to sweetness and light. The examples are all around us.

As for the general concept of “accepting other cultures,” some are worthy of being accepted. Others are not.

      Thanks for weighing in.

      1. I get your point, but in my opinion, most people backing multiculturalism are looking to have diversity, in that they encourage the differences in food, dance, theatre etc., but not to the point of isolation, or taking over the lifestyle and beliefs of others

North America is a melting pot, the difference being that until very recently, the immigrants were primarily white, and essentially, we all looked the same. Times have changed, with modern science and medicine more infants in 3rd world countries are surviving, and they want the opportunity to have what we have, and the ones that can’t get here want to modernize their way of life.

The hardliners blame us, and they think they can scare their countrymen into following them by terrorism. I can’t say I blame the refugees for wanting to get out. Meanwhile, we need to be vigilant about who comes in. If people matching my age, race, etc., were responsible, I would gladly go through the security procedures. Why waste time searching 75-year-old women when young men and women are the culprits. I never had much use for political correctness, not changing now. That includes your Q-tip.

        1. Kris: You talking heap good sense, white man.

          A couple of items:

Often when people praise multiculturalism, they point to trivialities like different music and ethnic restaurants. Well, I too love Thai food. And so what? It’s got nothing to do with the primary problem. It’s a diversionary tactic.

Of course, people in the developing world want to move to the United States or Canada. Trouble is, they cannot all do that without ruining the United States and Canada, culturally and financially. Enforced borders are needed. As you note, vigilance is needed regarding immigrants. Your saying that cheers me.

But the gorilla in the room these days is not immigration in general, legal or otherwise. It’s the Mohammedan thing. It ain’t Mexicans or Central Americans or East Indians or Kenyans. It’s the dreadful world of Mohammedans.

Only one issue fueled Brexit: the increasing number of people from Middle East societies who set up those very real no-go zones in Great Britain and other EU nations. They did not come in to assimilate, believe me. They all need to be rounded up and shipped back to Islamabad ASAP.

  3. Something that is seldom discussed about the failures of immigration in Europe is that the near-Eastern hordes who are pouring in are little-educated, often semi-literate, and in no way prepared to integrate into technologically advanced, highly specialized societies. Yes, culture has a role to play, but so do education and skill. Studies show that the well-educated immigrants tend to blend into Europe while the others don’t.

See this video for details; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Txk-CZRFEoQ
Dr. Tino Sanandaji (Kurdish-Swedish economist and author) joins Dave Rubin, discussing political correctness and the immigration crisis in Sweden.

Sanandaji makes a case that the criteria for immigration should be what they used to be: education and technical skills.

    1. Kim: “Near-Eastern hordes”! Listen to you. I am so proud.

Interesting video. And, of course, education and skills should be the deciding factors on letting in new citizens. Otherwise, a nation is simply importing more people for the tax-funded, social-welfare system. It is, as they say, a no-brainer.

      1. Well, they are hordes, aren’t they? Not today, but recently they were literally massing at the borders of Europe. What else do you call them?

  4. Multiculturalism can succeed when it is voluntary. When it is imposed it can be quite toxic, either legally or via political correctness. When it becomes mandatory it can have an opposite negative effect creating schisms, conflicts, and even violence.

Obama has been stoking racial and religious problems during the last seven years and it is beginning to destroy our culture.

    1. Andrés: I put to you that multicultural societies are risky at best, no matter how they are formed. Of course, the problems magnify significantly when they are mandated.

And don’t get me started on Weepy Barry.

    2. Obama has not been stoking racial and religious problems, so quit blaming him for the racists and religious fanatics who have polarized society with their ignorance and hatred.

  5. I have always wondered how mass murder can be seen as an act of religious piety. Watch this:

    1. Señor Gill: Mass murder can easily be seen as an act of religious piety — and is — if the religion says it is, and the religion’s adherents are sufficiently knuckleheaded to believe it — and they are.
