FROM THE Star-Tribune in Minneapolis yesterday:
In their boldest statement since George Floyd’s killing, nine Minneapolis City Council members told a crowd Sunday that they will “begin the process of ending the Minneapolis Police Department.”
“We recognize that we don’t have all the answers about what a police-free future looks like, but our community does,” they said, reading off a prepared statement. “We’re committed to engaging with every willing community member in the City of Minneapolis over the next year to identify what safety looks like for you.”
Those nine members make up a veto-proof majority of the Democrat-dominated Minneapolis City Council.
I thought the part where the women reading the statement told police to just keep working while they figure out how to fire them and replace them with social justice workers was interesting. Here is an idea. Replace guns and batons with magic wands.

Kirk: I have it marked on my calendar a year from now to check and see if Minneapolis actually fired its police force. I cannot imagine they will due to its being an imbecilic idea. What they’re saying now is pure political pandering.

An incredibly imbecilic idea. I am beyond words.

Leisa: I really want them to do it just so we can witness the aftermath. Other cities — Democrat-run, of course — are making noises about doing the same thing. Maybe the police will be replaced with some unarmed, high-falootin’ Eagle Scouts … or something.

Ohhh! My wife’s niece lives in Minneapolis. During the festivities, she hid out with friends in St. Paul. Now what is or isn’t going to happen when the animals and freaks are turned loose on the population?
What won’t be burned or looted?

Señor Gill: The animals and freaks are already running loose. And with the help of the powers that be.
Glad I’m not up there.

“what safety looks like for you.” Well, I don’t think it will be Minneapolis.

Doesn’t this have an odd echo of one of those science fiction films that start with: “How did it come to this? I can remember when a trip to the grocery store did not require a 16-member neighborhood armed force. Or am I just making that up?”
The screenplay now only requires your addition of 92 pages.

85 people shot, 24 dead, in Chicago on the weekend, great time to get rid of the police. What are they thinking?

Kirk: And likely every one of them, or almost, was shot by a black person. Where’s the outrage about that?

Just have citizens who don’t want police sign an opt-out clause. When they call 911 they will get a “call can not be completed as dialed” recording.

Thirsty: That’s a heck of a good solution. Let’s forward it to the Minneapolis City Council, and to those other Democrat-run cities that are thinking of doing the same idiocy.

Oi ,Felipe, keep us Eagle Scouts out of the fray! Then again, a few good Scouts in the right places could do the world a good turn today. Stay healthy Dude!

Dan: I imagine the loonies who want to replace the police with some smaller, nicer, unarmed, “community” group are thinking of something like the Scouts. You guys don’t pack heat, do you? As for my staying healthy, I’m feeling pretty fine. Same to you.

The part of defunding police that does make sense is taking away from police some of the jobs that they don’t really want to do in the first place, and which are not really police functions, and having social service people do those jobs. These would be things like mental health and homelessness.

Creigh: I have not seen anywhere that the whirly-birds who want to defund the police are addressing the issues you mention.

The socialist government of Minneapolis’ goal is to to eliminate the police union. Basically, fire all the cops and re-hire the ones who meet their new standards and eliminate the “bad cops,” of which there are many on that force who are protected by the police union.

Doug: Socialists normally do not go after unions. Quite the opposite. And I think the cop-defunding business is broader than just a union issue. But, as always, I could be wrong. It happens. Thanks for the feedback. Feel free to return. You sound smart.
