Is truth irrelevant?

(The following is a guest post by Thomas Sowell, a national treasure.)

It is amazing how many people seem to have discovered last Wednesday that riots are wrong — when many of those same people apparently had not noticed that when riots went on, for weeks or even months, in various cities across the country last year.*

For too many people, especially in the media, what is right and wrong, true or false, depends on who it helps or hurts politically. Too many media people who are supposed to be reporters act as if they are combatants in political wars.

Someone once said that, in a war, truth is the first casualty. That has certainly been so in the media — and in much of academia as well.

One of the most grotesque distortions growing out of this carelessness with the facts has been a removal of Abraham Lincoln’s name and statues from various places, on grounds that he saw black people only as property.

Such criticisms betray an incredible ignorance of history — or else a complete disregard of truth.

As a lawyer, Abraham Lincoln knew that there was nothing in the Constitution which authorized him or any other president to free slaves. But he also knew that a military commander in wartime can legally seize the property of an enemy nation. Defining slaves as property gave President Lincoln the only legal authority he had to seize them during the Civil War. And once they were seized as property, he could then free them as human beings.

But, if the Emancipation Proclamation had based its action on defining the slaves as human beings, with a right to be free, the Supreme Court of that era would undoubtedly have declared it unconstitutional.

Millions of human beings would have remained slaves. Would ringing rhetoric be worth that price?

As for the claim that Lincoln did not regard black people as human, he invited Frederick Douglass to the White House.

Gross distortions of history, in order to get Abraham Lincoln’s name removed from schools tells us a lot about what is wrong with American education today.

Many schools are closed because of the coronavirus and the teachers unions. And many schools in minority neighborhoods failed to teach children enough math and English, back when they were still open. So it is incredible that school authorities have time to spend on ideological crusades like removing names and statues from schools.

Such criticisms betray an incredible ignorance of history — or else a complete disregard of truth.

Unfortunately, too many American educational institutions — from elementary schools to universities — have become indoctrination centers. The riots that swept across the country last year are fruits of that indoctrination and the utter disregard for other people’s rights that accompanied those riots.

At the heart of that indoctrination is a sense of grievance and victimhood when others have better outcomes — which are automatically called “privileges” and never called “achievements,” regardless of what the actual facts are.

Facts don’t matter in such issues, any more than facts mattered when smearing Lincoln.

Any “under-representation” of any group in any endeavor can be taken as evidence or proof of discriminatory bias. But those who argue this way cannot show us any society — anywhere in the world, or at any time during thousands of years of recorded history — that had all groups represented proportionally in all endeavors.

In America’s National Hockey League, for example, there are more players from Canada than there are players from the United States. There are also more players from Sweden than from California, even though California’s population is nearly four times the population of Sweden.

Californians are more “under-represented” in the NHL than women are in Silicon Valley. But no one can claim that this is due to discriminatory bias by the NHL. It is far more obviously due to people growing up in cold climates being more likely to have ice-skating experience.

This is one of many factors that produce skewed statistics in many endeavors. Discriminatory bias is among those factors. But it has no monopoly.

Yet who cares about facts any more, in this age of indoctrination?

* Felipe’s note: Last year’s widespread, leftist riots were scarcely reported in the mainstream media, so if you get “informed” by CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, etc., it’s why you are ignorant of them.

Nutty gender proposals

Old, laughable, pasty-faced honkies masquerading as belligerent black folks.

Behold today’s Democrat Socialist Oh-So-Woke Party, the people I used to hang with before they went over the edge and fell into a deep, putrid pit populated by men in women’s wear and ugly women with purple hair and too-short bangs.

You likely know nothing of this telling move if you get your “news” from CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post (“Democracy Dies in Darkness!”) and their unsavory ilk. And you are wondering … What move is that?

Nancy Pelosi, still upright at 80, has introduced rules changes for the upcoming Congress. They have to be voted on, but one wonders who will have the nerve to vote no? She wants to eliminate gender terms such as father, mother, son and daughter. All in the interest of inclusion and diversity, those unholy gods of the modern lunatic left.

But I’m just the messenger today in case you’ve not heard of this. You can read the grisly, absurd, patronizing details right here from an actual news outlet.

Next thing you know, Democrats will elect anti-American Mohammedans to Congress. Whoops! That’s already happened, you say?

Happy New Year.

Felipe’s election prediction

I tend to be a pessimist. Here’s what I think stands a good chance of happening in the presidential election. Bottom line, the Democrats will steal it.

Biden cannot possibly win a clean vote. Trump holds enthusiastic rallies attended by tens of thousands. Biden holds rallies attended by, well, tens on a good day. There is no enthusiasm for Biden at all. He’s a worn-out pol, a stand-in for the radical Round-Heels Harris.

The Democrat Socialist Party has been trying to push Trump out of office since the day he was inaugurated. Nothing has worked, and here we are at the end game.

Leftists are crafty, unprincipled people and smart. Conservatives are smart too, but we are not crafty, and we have principles. In many ways, we are complete nincompoops. Leftists have us calling them “liberals” and “progressives,” when they are neither. They have us saying “Google something” instead of “do an internet search.” Google is a major-league leftist gang, as you know. And even you say “Google it,” don’t you?

Words matter.

Another example of the naïve nincompoopery of conservatives is the large number of corporations who’ve donated to the radical Marxist outfit BLM. Leftists lead clueless, wide-eyed conservatives around on dog leashes.

All this mail-in vote nonsense was initiated by leftists because they know it’s open to manipulation. As for those polls that show Biden ahead or, lately, neck and neck, most of the polls are run by leftists, and those false results will justify Biden’s “victory.” The polls are just as partisan as the modern mainstream media.

Think back to the last four years of hysteria and lies. You think that now, facing their last opportunity, the Democrat Socialist Party is going to roll over and accept honest election results? There is historic skullduggery just around the bend.

I could be mistaken. I pray so.

Blindsided us in 2016! Not today, Bub!

Fake news in action

The press has been playing defense for Portland anarchists for weeks, suggesting riots and arson against a federal courthouse were provoked by federal agents protecting it.

— The Wall Street Journal

and

So much for that. Over the weekend Portland police were forced to declare two riots.

— The Associated Press

I rarely read The New York Times, but this morning I looked at its home page. There is not one word about the ongoing riots in Portland. Zilch. There is a small headline down-page that says, “Seattle police chief to resign as council seeks budget cuts.”

Budget cuts! What the council voted to do was defund the Seattle Police Department by a whopping 50 percent. It’s a ho-hum, slanted headline.

Both Portland and Seattle are run by Democrats.

There are, however, numerous headlines pushing racial issues. “Racism’s hidden toll,” “Meet the Brave But Overlooked Women of Color Who Fought for the Vote” “For Doctors of Color, Microaggressions Are All Too Familiar.”

No lack of race-based coverage and obsession with victimization.

Then I turned to the home page of The Washington Post. Again, not one word about the nightly riots in Portland. To its small credit, however, down-page again, there is a story about the Seattle police chief’s resignation, and the defunding issue is mentioned in the headline as it should be.

One thing that stands out to this former newspaper editor, i.e. me, is that both papers, running down the right side of the home page, cite their editorial columns, most of which are either race-focused or pure Trump hate. This adding of editorial pieces to the home page/front page is not how things are normally done. It’s a tactic to promote the racial issues and Trump hate in the most direct way possible.

Opinions traditionally appear on opinion pages, not the front page, the new placement of which gives the opinions the odor of fact. Intentional, of course.

If you want a more accurate take on today’s news, there are various online news outfits that do an excellent job. One conservative site is here. Another is here.

A news website that covers both sides of the political divide is here.

Did you Democrats know this? Bet you thought it was the reverse.
